 Musical Instruments

In order to get the best possible result as far as musical instruments are concerned, the key factors are: appropriate, premium quality materials, and of course the luthiers’ good taste, love and enthusiasm.

 

LUTE
CRETAN LUTE. The lute can be found in Greece in many forms. The Constantinople lute (lafta), the lute of the islands almost identical to the mainland lute and the Cretan lute. They present differences in size, weight and tuning. The Cretan lute is the biggest and is tuned to E – A – D – G from the lowest course to the highest. It accompanies lyra and violin.

LAVTA
Pear shaped Constantinople lute. Small body, nylon strings, has moving frets and produces non-tempered scales of Byzantine music. It is tuned to D-A-D-A.

Cretan lyra. Modern Cretan lyra is a combination of vrontolyra and lyraki (small lyra). Belongs to stringed instruments with a bow and has its roots in the Orient.

MANDOLA
FLAT MANDOLA: Plucked stringed instrument. It dates back to medieval times and the name appears in documents dating from 1210 AD. Its current form is very different and is a larger scale mandolin.
